It’s official…ABC has cancelled Pushing Daisies. I still haven’t watched this past week’s episode yet — the series finale, as it turns out — but when I do so, I’m sure I’ll be a little misty-eyed. I hear it ends on a big cliffhanger, too. Damn you, ABC!
ABC has also cancelled Dirty Sexy Money, another show I watched and really enjoyed, and Eli Stone, which I watched last year but had to stop because the terrible, terrible writing was making me angry. So I guess ABC scores a 1 out of 3.
I suppose I should have expected the death of Pushing Daisies. It’s just so hard for shows that are whimsical to make it in a world where the graphic, hardcore deaths of CSI, Law and Order, and Criminal Minds are what people (apparently) really want to see. Doesn’t anyone like to watch happy shows anymore?
Other lovely, original, whimsical shows that I have loved that died a horrible, early death include: Strange Luck, Firefly, Cupid (although there is a rumour that it will be revived next year with a new cast), Flying Blind, and Karen Sisco. It’s like a curse. Sigh.

Cupid might be revived? Hello!?!
I loved, loved, loved that show. However, if by “with a new cast” you’re implying “without Jeremy Piven”, then a lot more work will be needed to convince me to watch it.
I think I have the same curse – Firefly, Veronica Mars, Freaks & Geeks, Undeclared, and so many others. The first show that I remember being unfairly cancelled was My So-Called Life.
So…it’s not exactly “official”. what’s official is that this year there will only be 13 episodes (7 of which haven’t been shown yet). ABC hasn’t picked up another 13 episodes, so it looks pretty grim. But this is the kind of situation that fans can turn around with letters, emails, petitions etc.
Just tossing that out there. Check out http://thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=7858 for the full story.
CapnPlanet — The remake is actually being filmed now, so looks like we will see at least a pilot. It has the same original creator (Rob Thomas, who now has more clout since he created Veronica Mars and the new 90210), but the cast has changed. Cupid will be played by Bobby Cannavale and Sarah Paulson will take the female lead, I think.
Mel – Oh, I forgot about Freaks and Geeks. It’s crazy how beloved that show was/is, and how now-famous its entire cast is. I was never a So-Called fan, but I do see the appeal and it also stands as the gold standard of shows-cancelled-before-their-time. Sigh.
RheostaticsFan — True, they did not use the word “cancelled.” But ABC doesn’t even have any of these three shows on their schedule beyond the second week of December — meaning that some of the existing episodes do not even have air dates at this time. I’m sure the fat lady hasn’t sung yet, but she is warming up in the wings!
Oh is it really true about Dirty Sexy Money? What will I do without my weekly date with Nick George. That is truly heart breaking.
