I was just reading this week’s EW and they often post the top 25 rated shows on TV (network shows, that is), but I usually skim over that section because I don’t care too much. This week I had a look and I was pretty surprised at what I found there. has quizzed me on this in the past and I usually get the top 10 about right — but the rest of the top 25 is interesting, to say the least.
I’ll let y’all hazard your own guesses, and I’ll post the list in the jump.
1. CSI (CBS)
2. Desperate Housewives (ABC)
3. Without a Trace (CBS)
4. Survivor: Guatemala (CBS)
5. CSI: Miami (CBS)
6. Grey’s Anatomy (ABC)
7. Lost (ABC)
8. Monday Night Football (ABC)
9. NCIS (CBS)
10. Cold Case (CBS)
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC) (tie)
12. Two and a Half Men (BCS)
13. 60 Minutes (CBS)
14. CSI:NY (CBS)
Law and Order: SVU (NBC) (tie)
16. Commander in Chief (ABC)
17. Criminal Minds (CBS)
ER (NBC) (tie)
19. House (Fox)
20. My Name Is Earl (NBC)
21. Out of Practice (CBS)
22. Crossing Jordan (NBC)
23. Law and Order: Criminal Intent (NBC)
24. Las Vegas (NBC)
Medium (NBC) (tie)
Like I said, I usually can name the top 10 but I was pretty surprised to find NCIS up there — who watched that? And Crossing Jordan — who knew that it was still on the air? Also surprising — that the two Law and Order spin-offs do better than the original. And I find it terribly sad that all three CSIs (the bittermaker!) made the top 15. Crap.
The best news though, is that House, my new total obsession, is in the top 20. Yay! I’m so used to fighting for Veronica Mars that it’s nice to watch a hit show for a change.
I watched House last night, and I definitely liked it. We’ll have to have a catch up session soon since I doubt I’ll go back and watch all that I’ve missed.
Out of curiosity, I’ve watched a couple episodes of Two and a Half Men. It’s actually kind of cute, but perhaps it seems likable just because there aren’t any other good sitcoms out there except My Name is Early. I mean, look at that list! Of the 25, only 2 are sitcoms. Interestingly, they’re both kind of male-oriented sitcoms, both showing life from a guy’s point of view. Nothing wrong with that, but you’d think someone out there would think life from a girl’s perspective would be funny, too.
We can definitely catch you up on House. Actually we have all of season 1 downloaded at the moment so if you are interested, I could burn them for you, or you could just come over and watch them.
We’ve been talking a fair bit about how House is a procedural like CSI — you can catch any one episode and its story arc is self-contained — but yet, it is a much, much better show than CSI. I think it’s because they get the balance between character and action correct — we like it for the characters, not the disease-of-the-week. Personally I have quite the crush on House.
As for comedies, there has been lots of talk these days about the “death” of the comedy. I think My Name Is Earl has restored hope to a lot of broadcasters. I would love to see them add Scrubs to the new Thursday night lineup instead of that crap new show, Four Kings, and that would actually make a two-hour block of comedy worth watching. Now that Sex and the City and Arrested Development are off the air (actually, the last few episodes of AD are airing now), there’s not a lot of comedy left.
Although, I do like a few comedic-dramas — Monk and House (which has a lot of laughs) come to mind, as well as Desperate Housewives. I hear Grey’s Anatomy and Gilmore Girls can be pretty funny too. So maybe that’s the new comedy format…
A good friend of mine loves Grey’s Anatomy (and House).
I can’t watch Gilmore Girls because of Alexis Bledel.
I agree that they should have put Scrubs on Thursdays; I watched 2 minutes of Four Kings and couldn’t take it any further. Rubbish!
I was thinking, after I posted my original reply, that My Name is Earl isn’t even a sit com. It’s a comedy, but not a sit com. So there really is only one sit com that’s worth watching right now. Crazy!
