Overdue: The Final Frontier

The baby ignored yesterday’s thunderstorms, but today is, as promised, wickedly humid — the high is 30, with a humidex of 38 — and more showers and thunderstorms are called for, so we can still have our gothic birth situation. I saw my OB this morning and nothing is going on in the important areas, so it’s not looking too promising, though.

I must say, this “overdue” thing is something I feel completely unprepared to deal with. I was so sure I’d have the baby last night. My OB wants to know how I feel about being induced, and I’ve never had to even think about it before, so I just don’t know. For now I told her I’d wait at least one more week, as long as the baby is doing okay. In the meantime, she’s booked me for a couple of non-stress tests on the baby for this week, and an ultrasound for early next week, to make sure everything is still okay.

Until then…I’m pretty tired. And hot. You may have heard. Hopefully I can get some rest today and relax a little bit.

I assume you mean, you’ll be back in time for the birth? I’m starting to wonder that, too! I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Ya, that’s what I meant. I won’t be able to call to check in while I’m away, but I should have email access. Can I bother you to send me a daily update so I don’t spend too much time and energy obsessing?

Take a drive out into the country and visit me! It’s only 22 degrees here and very nice.

And you can be guaranteed that driving half an hour into Quebec will induce that thing to pop out. For sure.

If it’s any comfort, Drama Prince was born 24 hours after a doctor declared that nothing was happening and it would be at *least* a week until delivery.

So were my other two! I went from nothing to birth in just a few hours…but I’m trying not to count on that with this one. I hear the waiting gets to be just excruciating if you are on constant high alert. Sigh.

For sure…a long drive would DEFINITELY bring on the labour! I almost went to the mall with the kids yesterday morning but I envisioned myself going into labour at the food court, with two preschoolers in tow, and while mall security called an ambulance I would have to explain that yes, I was out and about the town with my kids ON MY DUE DATE, and everyone would be like, “Lady, you CRAZY.” So I thought better of it :).

But if the baby is still in there a week from now…field trip to Mr. Hand’s house!

I went to a Toronto Raptors game on my due date. At 11 days overdue I walked from the Harbourfront to the Eaton Centre and back (you remember Toronto — that is a pretty good distance for a 9.5 month pregnant woman to waddle.) What I’m saying is that you can’t force it, believe me, I tried and NOTHING worked. My advice is to go about your “normal” daily business and the baby will (or will not in my case) come in good time.

Also, I would not suggest induction this early in the game if things are looking good. It makes labour a lot more intense (I only know how it feels to be induced, but from comparing to other mom’s labours, mine was quite intense — none of this contractions every 5 minutes business; contractions came 2 minutes or less from beginning to end.) And being induced isn’t natural, so there can be other side effects (of which I won’t go into here.) Talk to your doctor long and hard if he/she insists on induction if he (the baby) is still looking great. Most hospitals won’t let you go more than 10 days overdue anyway (ha – unless +10 days falls on a holiday!) Don’t worry, it’s very likely that your baby will come in the next couple of days.
