We’ve been invited to a cottage for the weekend, and we have to provide Sunday lunch for everyone. We recognise that not everyone in the world is vegetarian, so we’ve decided on cold cut sandwiches. They’ll be hummus for the veggies that are there (ah, the glory of a nice hummus and havarti sandwich, when the bread is really fresh…I love that).
So poll time…if you were going to be at said cottage, what would you want on your sandwich?
White bread or brown?
What kind of meat…and is prepackaged Schneiders okay, or are we talking strictly Loblaws meat counter if we want to be invited back?
What kind of vegetables and condiments?
What would you have on the side…chips, salad, veggies and dip, mixed fruit?
I think I can handle the cheese selection…but we are taking all forms of advice here.
For my money, nothing beats a mutton, lettuce, and tomato sandwich, when the mutton is really lean…
But failing that, you can go a number of ways: fancy, simple, different.
Fancy: grilled turkey breast with tomato and brie
Simple: assorted deli meats, breads, cheeses, veggies, and condiments on a platter for DIY sammies
Different: you ever had those pastrami packages? They’re little individual sandwich-sized pastrami chunks wrapped in plastic. You boil them until hot, then cut them open and put them on rye bread with mustard. Delicious and unexpected.
Lots of people like fancy sauces, but you don’t want to get bogged down in condiments: can’t go wrong with Miracle Whip/mayo and simple French’s prepared mustard.
I’m a big chip person. Also fantastic: those Cheerios snack mixes. Like Bits and Bites on ‘roids.
Mmmm, I’m suddenly hungry.
Oh don’t get started on Princess Bride quotes! She’ll never get her grocery list done. 🙂
Bread: either
Meat: oven-roasted turkey breast, maybe a little ham
Counter or package? Haven’t had packaged before, I don’t think. I’m sure it’s fine.
Condiments: mayonnaise is a must, some dijon or mustard, broccoli slaw (but only I do the broccoli slaw, I think; before slaw it was lettuce or baby spinach)
Side dish: macaroni salad, potato salad, fruit salad, Waldorf salad (so good and yet I never get any), mixed green salad
Definitely go deli — no prepackaged meat if you want to look good.
Chips are nice; I think sun chips are a good choice, particularly with their (admittedly weak) claim to being slightly healthier than most other chips.
Veggies and dip are also good; my favorites: broccoli and ranch or blue cheese dip.
And potato and pasta salads are nice too. However, here I find that the stuff you get at the deli is almost intolerably rich; if you can make your own, I’d strongly recommend that. If not, maybe skip them or get small portions (thereby downplaying their role).
