Christmas comes sooner and sooner…

A couple of weekends ago we put our Christmas lights up on the house, because we didn’t want to be doing it when it was snowy and icy and freezing outside (I say “we” but really Sir Monkeypants did all the work). We thought we were being all wise and forward-thinking.

But here it is just two weeks later, and since it is snowing outside, it seems everyone is in the festive spirit. I went out last night and almost a third of the houses on our street (a long one, so we’re taking at least 8 or 9 houses) not only had their lights up, but had them turned on!!

At my house it was always a rule that we weren’t even allowed to mention Christmas until after my birthday, which is tomorrow. So everyone and their lights better step in line, or my mom will see to it that Santa doesn’t bring them anything this year!

We haven’t had Thanksgiving yet, but already there’s Christmas music in the stores and commercials on TV. (i.e. Scrooge) is already grumbling. I guess it’s tough for you people who have near-Christmas birthdays.

The first couple of Christmas’s in our house we dreamed and planned of putting up lights. We never did. I haven’t even thought about it this year until I read your post. It would be awfully nice to have some — all of our neighbours do. And if we ever spend a Christmas at our own house, I’d like to have a real tree!

Happy birthday (in advance)! Hope you have a great day tomorrow …

Are you planning on staying home this year? Or will it be travel again?

I think it’s much harder in the States to avoid this early-Christmas stuff because they’ve come to see Thanksgiving as part of the whole “holiday season.” I must say that with a 4-day holiday so close to Christmas, it makes it easier for families with in-laws who are in different cities — you can say that one family “gets” Thanksgiving while the other lays claim to Christmas, and it all seems like that sort of festive-time-of-year so it all works out. I’ve seen lots of TV shows and movies where the featured Thanksgiving dinner has a Christmas tree in the background. It’s crazy, we still have our pumpkins from Halloween on the front porch!

I saw xmas stuff in stores near the end of September this year. Soon those hokey Christmas in July stores won’t be a novelty.

I agree, it’s way too early for private residences to be displaying their holiday lights (unless the people a few blocks over with the Senator on their lawn have lights all over him!)

Aren’t there really only 12 days of Christmas?

    Have a great birthday tomorrow!

Oh my God, do you think the Senator really will be lit up??? I’m going over there on the weekend to check it out. If he gets lights this season, I will definitely take a photo and post it!

I have no idea what you’re talking about, but the lawn Senator sounds intriguing. Definitely post the picture!

We’ll be travelling again. What about you guys?

I think the benefit of the Thanksgiving holiday is that when you return to work afterwards, you never quite get back up to the productivity level you had before the holiday, and its usually an easy ride from there on to Christmas. 🙂

Bring that pumpkin in — one year we waited too long and it was moldy by the time we got to it.

It’s garbage day today and you’ll be pleased to know that I have successfully moved the pumpkins from the porch to the curb, despite the ice and snow. I am woman!

We vowed to stay home for Christmas forever and ever starting last year, but of course we are faltering. Now we are considering a whirlwind trip down where we drive one day, see my family one day, see the in-laws one day, then drive home. Whee!

But now we have purchased the awesomest train set ever for Captain Jelly Belly, and we really want to see him get it on Christmas morning, so…who the heck knows. We are flaky in the extreme!

That would be so cool if he had lights on him, or better yet, a santa suit!
Photos would be great if he’s decorated.

FYI…smokingtoaster (ok, how do I make her name into a link?), they have a neighbour who has a life-sized statue of an Ottawa Senator (like the one on the jerseys) on their lawn. He’s very cool.
