I just found out that, my entire life, I have been pronouncing “opaque” wrong! Sir Monkeypants just corrected me that it’s “o-pake” not “o-paag”. I am soooo embarrassed.
I thought I’d ironed out all the kinks when I finally stopped pronouncing “relevant” as “revelant.”
At least I think I’ve got “epitome” down. 🙂

Don’t feel bad. Just in the last year or so, has gleefully pointed out that I mispronounce
Azalea (a-ZA-lee-a, not A-za-LEE)
Hyperbole (like epitome, the final e is pronounced)
I’m sure there have been others. Of course I won’t make those mistakes again, but who knows what other pronunciation skeletons are lurking in my closet?
Oh, and I remember many years ago being embarrassed to discover that “awry” is not pronounced “AW-ry”, but “a-WRY”.
I think this happens a lot to people who read a lot as a children – you encounter a lot of new words, and for some the pronunciation is not obvious, so you make up something reasonable, and it sticks.
Hyperbole has the final ‘e’ pronounced. The word that you’d been using was ‘hyperbowl’ where there is no final e and you were pronouncing it correctly. That’s the big contest at Berkley where the math undergrad take on the football team. The contest is part football and part math. It’s a close call who’ll win every year.
