Iconic movie quotes

I really dislike Stephen King. I think he’s a hack writer with little to say, and his column on the back page of Entertainment Weekly has done nothing to dissuade me from that opinion. Last week’s column, though, asked people to send in their favourite movie quotes from recent times — the kind that make for in-jokes and conversation shorthand between your personal friends and family. Although as trite as his other ideas, there’s nothing I love more than talking about movie quotes, so here are a few of mine — most of which I use at least once a week with .

From The Princess Bride:
(grandfather to grandson): Yes, yes, you’re very smart, now be quiet.
(Inigo to Miricle Max): Please, sir, we’re in a terrible rush.
(Wesley to Buttercup): Gently…GENTLY!
(Inigo): Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya…

From Die Hard 3:
(McClane): Nice…rhymes.
(Zeus): Not even God knows what you’re doing!

From Speed:
(Annie): But I’m not available to drive tomorrow. Busy.
(Annie, to kids in the road): Why aren’t you in school! Why aren’t you in school!
(Annie, to cars coming at her while she’s driving on the wrong side of the road): People stay out of my way!

I’m sure I’ll think of a million more tonight. See the comments section for any additional quotes I think of.

What are your favourites?

Being a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, any quotes I use regularly come from that show. Let’s see:

Willow (as wicked-vampire Willow): “Bored now.” (it’s ALL in the inflection of the voice…)

Headline from Sunnydale High Newspaper displayed in yearbook office:
“Apathy on the rise. No one cares.”

Oz to Willow (in response to her having a “freakish overdramatic woman” moment over something he said to her): “That’s what I’d call a radical interpretation of the text.”

There are SO MANY great lines, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Fun activity, I’ll admit (although I’m with you on the Stephen King comments. Ick.)

I knew I’d think of a ton more last night.

    From Bubba Ho-Tep:
    Elvis: TCB baby, TCB.
JFK: Don’t ask me, I’m thinkin’ with sand!

    From Aladdin:
Genie: 10,000 years will give you suck a crick in the neck!

    From Tin Cup:
    Romeo (sweetly): Flowers.
Kevin Costner: I don’t know, Romes, when I was with Earl, I wasn’t thinking of you, and when I was with you, I wasn’t thinking of Earl…
    Romeo: Winna winna chicken dinna!
Kevin’s ex-girlfriend (about the pancake house): No no, it’s in Odessa, I’m from Odessa, and it’s in Odessa.

    From Dead Again:
Gray Baker (through a voice box): Give me your cigarettes!!

From the animated short The Big Snit:
    Man: Stop shaking your eyes!
    Woman: Stop sawing the table!
Man: I’m not sawing the table!
Woman: You’re sawing the table right now!

Buffy totally counts. I’m a huge, huge fan myself, and the whole show is just so quotable. My favourites for every day conversation is “come with” (as in, “want me to come with” — probably not created by Buffy, but definitely made popular there) and “bitca” (Xander’s interpretation of the spelled-out B-I-T-C-H). I’m also fond of Faith’s phrase, “five by five.”

Ah, I miss the Buffster. Thank God for DVD!

Isn’t it “Yes, yes, you’re very smart. Shut up.”? If not, I’ve been using that one incorrectly for years on . What’s funny is that I used it for a long time before he had seen the movie, so he thought I was very rude. 🙂

Man, I never read those Stephen King columns. I much prefer Stupid Questions.

Anyway, here are some of our other favourites:

    From Office Space:
    Lumbergh: Um, ya….
    Lumbergh: Whaaaat’s happening.
Michael Bolton: No talent ass clown.
Samir: That is a very very bad idea.

From How to Marry a Millionaire:
    Schatze: Those bubbleheads…

    From Gentleman Prefer Blondes:
Lorelei: Goodbye, lover! (And the use of “lover” in general)

    I’m sure I’ll think of a tonne more today…

I just popped in our Princess Bride DVD to double check. You’re quite right, the line is, “Yes, you’re very smart. Shut up.”

I must admit that and I usually do say “shut up” at the end of the line, but I always thought we were mis-quoting it — I didn’t think the grandfather would actually tell his grandson to shut up! I guess we had it right all along.

I think “Shut up” makes it funnier because, ya, why would the grandfather say “Shut up”? Guess he’s supposed to all gruff and stuff… I love it.

    From Aliens:

Hudson: Game over man, game over, man! Game over! What the fuck are we gonna do now? What are we gonna do?

Ripley: How long before we’re declared overdue can we expect a rescue?
    Hicks: Seventeen days.
Hudson: Seventeen days? Look man, I don’t wanna rain on your parade, but we’re not gonna last seventeen hours!
Ripley: Hudson! This little girl survived longer than that with no weapons and no training, right?
Hudson: So why don’t you put her in charge?

Ripley: I don’t know which species is worse. You don’t see them fucking each other over for a goddamn percentage.

Hudson: Let’s just bug out and call it even, OK?
Ripley: I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. That’s the only way to be sure.
    Hudson: Fuckin’ A…
Burke: Hold on one second. This installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it.
    Ripley: They can *bill* me.

    From Contact:
Hadden: First rule in government spending: Why build one when you can have two for twice the price?

    Almost Famous
    Anita: FECK YOU!
    Mom: HEY!
Anita: This is a house of lies!
Mom: Well there it is, your sister used the “F” word.
William: I think she said “feck.”
    Mom: What’s the difference?
    William: The letter “u.”

    Lord of the Rings
Is is secret? Is it safe?

    High Fidelity
Rob: I don’t wanna hear old sad bastard music Barry, I just want something I can ignore.

    Customer: Do you have Soul?
    Rob: That all depends.

Oh and I have to add my favourite line from The Princess Bride:

    Vicini: He didn’t fall?! Inconceivable!
Inigo: You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

(But of course, he says it “You keep saying that hword. I do no thinka meansa what you thinka means.”)

Hey Princess Joy, I just read online that they are making an animated version of Buffy for next season! Sarah Michelle Gellar won’t be back — instead, Buffy will be voiced by the girl who does Buffy for the video games. However, Willow, Xander, and Giles will all be voiced by their original actors.

Joss Whedon is developing the series so I have high hopes!

Ah, Aliens — another rich source of quotable quotes. It’s a shame Bill Huxton totally blew the rest of his career. Loved all your choices.

My personal favourite Almost Famous quote for everyday use is “It’s all happening.” But I vow to work “feck you” into a few chats this week :).

Lord of the Rings: Legolas what do your elf eyes see (Aragorn). They Uraks turn north-east, they’re taking the hobits to Isengard. (Legolas)
Blood has been spilled this night. (Legolas)

Star wars: Luke I am your father. (Darth Vader)
